Doki Doki Crate for May, 2017

Doki Doki Crate's May theme is 'Kawaii Critters' and this month's box includes an assortment of kawaii creatures. A monthly box from Doki Doki Crate will cost you around $42 NZD per month, and shipping is free worldwide. There were a couple of items that I did like in this box but I think I'll continue to subscribe for only a couple more months before ending my subscription as I've yet to be wowed by Doki Doki Crate. I've also received my June box which does look a bit more promising. Below are the six items I received in the 'Kawaii Critters' box.

1. Antler Beret: Peach Deer

Well, this is an ugly beret that I'll never wear. The May box starts off with a pinky peach hat with brown antlers that represents the free-roaming deer of the city of Nara in Japan. I love hats and hardly ever leave home without one but this is one beret that I'll be leaving in a box buried at the back of my closet.

2. Aggressive Retsuko Stickers

These licensed Sanrio stickers contain Sanrio's latest character, Aggressive Retsuko, a red panda disguised as a business woman. Her story is that she gets angry at her co-workers and to let lose, she likes to sing death metal at karaoke bars.

Here's a close-up of this totally relate-able panda.

3. Children's Day Hoppe-Chan

This month's koi fish Hoppe-Chan represents Children's Day in Japan, an annual holiday where koi-shaped flags are raised in celebration. Fun fact: Koi fish are able to swim up waterfalls!

4. Sumikko Gurashi/Doraemon Shampoo Bottle

Out of the two different shampoo bottles I could have received, I got Doraemon, a time travelling robotic cat. This is the largest item in the Doki Doki Crate's May box!

5. Higemanju Gamaguchi Coin Purse

My second cat critter in this month's box is this fluffy, grey coin purse. Higemanju translates to "whiskered manju (steam bun)" and this derpy guy is an AMUSE creation.

The purse is lined with royal purple fabric and also has a purple ball chain so you can attach it to your keys or bag.

6. Sunhoseki Plush: Eclair Petit Lapin

This month's plush created by Japan Crate, is Petit Lapin, a bunny dressed as a chocolate eclair. Another soft kawaii plush to add to the collection!

Verdict: A nice enough box and one that I'm sure collectors of all things kawaii would appreciate, but Doki Doki Crate's May box really missed the mark for myself personally. I think this box has confirmed for me that I will soon be cancelling my subscription. Unfortunately, I don't think $42 NZD per month is worth it for what I've received in each box so far. There's no highlight in this box for me but I do appreciate the two cat critter items that were included. Doki Doki Crate is available at: www.japancrate.com/dokidoki
